Who represents the Southside?

Representation or (re)presentation is a complex term to fully grasp.  It is complex due to not only the idea of presenting something, an idea, an event, a person etc, but due to the fact that representation also produces meaning.  Representation is defined by Hall (2013) as:

The production of the meaning of the concepts in our minds through language.  It is the link between concepts and language which enables us to refer to either the ‘real’ world or objects, people or events, or indeed to imaginary worlds of fictional objects, people and events. (p. 3)

Therefore, to represent something is not as simple a task as reflecting what that person, object, event is, as when we do this we are producing meanings.  Representation becomes more complex when we examine how language is used to represent.  When we talk of languages we are not just talking about verbal, we are also…
